When Daniel and I were there, we saw plenty of North Pacific humpback whales while snorkeling from a small boat tour on the Big Island. Where is the best place to go whale watching on the Big Island?Maui is typically the most common place to see whales since the water tends to be warmer and calmer near this island. It’s one of the best things to do in Maui, but don’t let that stop you from booking whale watching tours on the Big Island of Hawaii if this is an activity you want to do.
The best place to find humpback whales is near the Kohala Coast. Whale sightings in this area tend to be two to three times better than other areas on the Big Island. This coastline is located on the most northern tip of the island, and it’s not often the easiest to get to.
That being said, there are plenty of whale tours that leave from Hilo or the Kona Coast. These are likely to be the areas where you will either fly in when you visit the Big Island, so booking boat tours from here can be much more convenient. This lessens the likelihood that you will see whales, but it’s definitely not impossible! When Daniel and I took a snorkeling tour, we saw plenty of gentle giants right by Hilo.
Keep in mind too that when you go whale watching is much more important than where you have your whale watching excursion booked. Humpback whales are located all throughout the Hawaiian Islands during whale season, so don’t feel as though you have to stick to one spot or another.

If you can, January and February are the ideal times to go since this is when seasonal humpback whales head to the Hawaiian Islands in order to mate and give birth.
You can still see them in March, but from April until December, the chances are very low and they are not located in Hawaiian waters. During this time, humpback whales spend time in Alaska or the Pacific Northwest to feed if they are located in the Northern Hemisphere.
The opportunities for whale sightings is limited, and if seeing a humpback whale is on your list of the best things to do in Hawaii, then you will want to make sure to visit during January and February.

When Daniel and I were in Hawaii, we technically did three types of whale watching tours so we could experience the magic in several ways.
Here are the main types of tours that you can expect when you want to spot whales on your trip.
Catamaran or pontoon-style boat
More sizable vessels offer additional features like restrooms and an onboard lounge, while also being equipped with enhanced tools like underwater hydrophones (for hearing whale sounds) and a cetacean observation camera. If you are looking for an opportunity to listen to whales sing on your boat ride, then this can be a good option. I also recommend this for those who have young kids or want to relax on their whale watching adventure.
You can also see from higher up, making it sometimes easier for whale sightings. However, also keep in mind that since you are on a larger ship, you might not be able to get as close to the whales as you would like.

The snorkeling along the Kona Coastline is especially known for being offering abundant sea life, so you can cross off two of these Hawaiian adventures off your list in one activity.
It can be harder to spot whales when you are closer to the water, however, and it can be bumpy boat ride depending on the weather. Also keep in mind that just because it’s whale watching season doesn’t mean that your tour won’t be canceled due to rain or other weather conditions–a bigger boat is more likely to head out on a whale watching tour if it is drizzling compared to a small boat.

That can give you a much better understanding of how humpback whales sing and what it sounds like with a professional recording.
Some whale watching tours also include headphones you can wear so you can hear the whales located near you. Since songs can be heard from many miles away, even if you can’t see them, you still might be able to hear them. Only male humpback whales sing!
I’ve managed to capture my own humpback whale songs on my GoPro HERO10 Black just by sticking it in the water on a kayaking tour. If you plan on getting close to humpback whales on your zodiac tour, you can even have your own whale song to take home with you!
Sometimes you can even hear a humpback whale by swimming relatively close. Of course, it is important to be respectful and keep your distance. However, diving a bit underwater off the Kona Coast might be enough to hear those songs during whale season.

If you are on a cruise, you’ll need fewer items on your Hawaii packing list than if you are planning on a snorkel tour. I recommended these items if you are on a cruise:

If you are planning on snorkeling, then you will need to check and see if your tour provider also offers gear. This can save you from having to pack all of your own gear in your suitcase.

- Look for spouts. You’ll probably see these before anything else on your whale watch. When a whale spouts, you’re likely to see them dive back down again into the water. This can also be helpful when you’re looking out into a vast sea.
- Consider a good pair of binoculars. While it can be fun seeing them with the naked eye on your Big Island whale adventure, this can give you an extra closeup. I also use a telephoto camera lens when I want to get a better picture!
- Be patient. You’re viewing animals in their natural habitat, meaning that you can’t control what they’ll do or when they will show up.
