10 Tips for Hiking at Altitude

Planning on taking on a tough hike at a high altitude?

Some of my absolute favorite hikes are at a higher altitude, including the Everest Basecamp trek, Inca Trail, and many others. But hiking at a higher elevation means that you are likely to find breathing–let alone walking–all the more difficult. Not only that, but altitude sickness is a real concern you face when taking on these types of hikes.

I’ve found several tips helpful when planning which trail I want to take on next. Most of all, it is important to be kind to your body. The consequences of not paying attention to how you are feeling can ultimately lead to bigger problems–both in the short-term for your safety, and the long-term for your health.

1. Know your elevation beforehand

Before you even hit the trail, research the elevation you’ll be hiking at and how much elevation gain you’ll encounter. There’s a huge difference between hiking at 8,000 feet versus 12,000 feet, and your body will respond very differently. I always check trail stats on AllTrails or park websites to know what I’m getting into.

Pay attention to both the starting elevation and the summit or high point—some trails start low but climb into serious altitude quickly. Understanding the numbers helps you set realistic expectations and prepare mentally. If you’re coming from sea level, anything above 8,000 feet can affect you, and symptoms often intensify significantly above 10,000 feet. Knowing these details lets you plan appropriate acclimatization time and adjust your hiking pace accordingly.

2. Acclimatize if you can

If possible, spend at least 24-48 hours at a moderate elevation before tackling high-altitude hikes. This gives your body time to start producing more red blood cells and adjusting to lower oxygen levels. When Daniel and I visit Colorado from sea level, we always spend a day or two in Denver or lower elevation areas before attempting fourteeners.

Even just sleeping at moderate elevation makes a noticeable difference. If you can’t dedicate multiple days, at least arrive the night before rather than driving straight from sea level to the trailhead that morning. Your body begins acclimatizing immediately, and even partial adjustment helps. The “climb high, sleep low” principle works too—spend time at higher elevations during the day but sleep at lower elevations when possible to aid recovery.

3. Increase altitude gradually

Don’t go from sea level to a 14,000-foot peak in one day if you can avoid it. I learned this lesson the hard way on an early Peru trip when I tried to hike at elevation the day after flying in from New York—it was absolutely miserable. Instead, structure your trip so you’re hiking at progressively higher elevations over several days.

Start with an 8,000-foot trail, then 10,000 feet, then push for higher peaks once your body has adjusted. The general guideline is to avoid ascending more than 1,000-1,500 feet per day once you’re above 10,000 feet, though this varies by individual. Listen to your body’s signals and don’t feel pressured to stick to an aggressive itinerary if you’re struggling with elevation. Gradual increases give your body time to adapt and dramatically reduce altitude sickness risk.

4. Make sure you have the right gear

High-altitude hiking requires specific gear considerations beyond your normal hiking setup. Sun protection becomes critical since UV exposure increases significantly with elevation—I always wear high SPF sunscreen and a hat above treeline. Layers are essential because temperatures fluctuate dramatically and weather changes rapidly at altitude. Bring a warm fleece and windproof jacket even on seemingly nice days.

Sunglasses with good UV protection are non-negotiable to prevent snow blindness and intense glare. Trekking poles help conserve energy on steep climbs where every breath counts. Consider altitude-specific items like a pulse oximeter to monitor oxygen saturation if you’re prone to altitude issues–I use my Oura ring for this. And absolutely bring more water capacity than you think you’ll need—hydration is crucial at altitude but easy to neglect when you’re focused on breathing and moving forward.

5. Know the signs of altitude sickness

Recognizing altitude sickness symptoms early can literally save your life or prevent a miserable experience from becoming dangerous. The most common symptoms include:

  • Headache (often the first sign)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fatigue beyond normal exertion
  • Shortness of breath at rest
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Confusion or difficulty with coordination

Mild altitude sickness (acute mountain sickness) is common and manageable, but if symptoms worsen or you develop severe headache, persistent vomiting, or confusion, descend immediately. More serious conditions like HACE (high altitude cerebral edema) or HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema) are life-threatening and require immediate descent and medical attention.

I’ve experienced mild altitude sickness on several occasions—that pounding headache and nausea are unmistakable. The golden rule is if symptoms don’t improve or get worse, go down. Don’t try to tough it out or wait to see if you feel better.

6. Plan for a one-day hike vs a multi-day hike

Your altitude strategy changes significantly between day hikes and multi-day backpacking trips. For day hikes, you can push a bit harder since you’ll return to lower elevation to sleep, which aids recovery. When Daniel and I hiked Mount Bierstadt, we started at the trailhead around 11,600 feet, summited at 14,060 feet, then drove back down to lower elevation that same day.

Your body handles this better than camping at high altitude. For multi-day trips, the “climb high, sleep low” principle becomes crucial—try to camp at lower elevations than your daily high points. If you must camp above 10,000 feet, ascend gradually and take rest days to acclimatize. Multi-day trips require more conservative pacing since you won’t get the recovery benefit of descending to sleep each night.

7. Hike with a buddy

Never hike at high altitude alone if you can avoid it. Altitude sickness can impair your judgment and coordination, making it difficult to recognize when you’re in trouble or to get yourself to safety. Having a hiking partner means someone can monitor your condition, help you make the decision to turn back, and assist if you need support descending.

When I’m hiking at altitude with Daniel or friends, we regularly check in with each other about how we’re feeling. Sometimes the person affected doesn’t realize how bad their symptoms are, and an outside observer can catch warning signs. Plus, if someone does develop serious altitude sickness, having a partner to help get them down or go for help can be lifesaving. Solo high-altitude hiking is significantly riskier than lower-elevation solo trips.

8. Hydrate

Hydration is absolutely critical at altitude, even more so than at sea level. The dry air and increased respiration rate cause you to lose fluids rapidly through breathing and sweating. I force myself to drink water constantly when hiking above 10,000 feet, even when I don’t feel particularly thirsty. Dehydration exacerbates altitude sickness symptoms and makes everything harder.

A good rule of thumb is to drink at least 3-4 liters of water per day at high altitude, more if you’re exerting yourself heavily. Your urine should be clear or pale yellow—anything darker means you need to drink more. I also avoid alcohol the night before and day of high-altitude hikes since it contributes to dehydration and can worsen altitude symptoms. Electrolyte supplements or drinks can help too, replacing minerals lost through increased respiration and sweat.

9. Turn back if necessary

This is the hardest advice to follow but potentially the most important. If you’re experiencing significant altitude sickness symptoms, turn around and descend, no matter how close you are to the summit or how much you’ve invested in the hike. I’ve had to make this call myself, and while it’s disappointing in the moment, it’s the right decision.

The mountain will always be there for another attempt when you’re better acclimatized. Pride and summit fever have killed experienced climbers—don’t let ego override safety. Descending even just 1,000-2,000 feet can bring dramatic relief from altitude symptoms. Remember that most altitude-related deaths occur during descent when people are exhausted and have depleted their reserves pushing to the summit. If someone in your group is struggling, the whole group should descend together. No summit is worth risking serious injury or death.

10. Check in with your body regularly

Make it a habit to pause every 30 minutes or so and honestly assess how you’re feeling. Are you more out of breath than you should be for the effort level? Is a headache developing? Feeling nauseated or dizzy? I set mental checkpoints on high-altitude hikes—at certain landmarks or elevation markers, I stop and evaluate.

This regular self-assessment helps you catch problems early before they become serious. Also pay attention to your hiking partners and encourage them to do the same. Sometimes we push through discomfort without acknowledging it’s becoming a real problem. Slowing down, taking breaks, eating snacks, and drinking water can often help mild symptoms from progressing. Trust your body’s signals—it’s usually smarter than your brain’s determination to reach a goal.
