Here’s what you need to know if you are planning on visiting Lake McDonald Lodge during your Glacier National Park itinerary.

History of Lake McDonald Lodge

Initially, John Lewis acquired the Snyder Hotel in 1896. Over the winter of 1913-14, he constructed a new 65-room hotel at the same location. Building materials that were unavailable locally had to be transported from the Belton depot and then ferried almost 10 miles across the lake. Designed as a hunting lodge, the Lewis Hotel served as a focal point for the community, with artist Charlie Russell occasionally sharing stories in the lobby. In 1930, the property was sold, and the new management renamed it the Lake McDonald Lodge.

Since then, Lake McDonald Lodge has become one of the more iconic of the Glacier National Park Lodges and a top spot for visitors to stay at if they can manage to book a room.

How to get to the Lake McDonald Lodge

To reach Lake McDonald Lodge in Glacier National Park, visitors can fly into Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell, Montana, which is approximately 33 miles away from the lodge. From there, you should rent a car to explore the park. Once inside the park after entering from the West Glacier Entrance, follow Going-to-the-Sun Road for about 10 miles along the scenic shore of Lake McDonald until you arrive at the main lodge and Lake McDonald Lodge Loop. The picturesque drive offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lake, making the journey an experience in itself.

Do I need reservations if I am staying at Lake McDonald Lodge?

No. Your stay at Lake McDonald Lodge acts as your ticket for Glacier National Park reservations the days you are booked. You will want to print out your reservation beforehand in case you do not have cell service in the park to show at the West Entrance past West Glacier.

What amenities does the Lake McDonald Lodge offer?

Lake McDonald Lodge features 82 cozy guest rooms, cabins, and suites that exude a rustic charm. Reflecting the period of their construction, the accommodations provide guests with basic amenities.

Several rooms and cabins underwent renovations in 2016, resulting in deluxe lodgings furnished with queen or king beds and high-quality upgrades. The lodge does not offer televisions, air conditioning, or elevators. Onsite facilities include a distinctive gift shop, a reading room, a camp store, a lounge, a fine dining restaurant, and a pizzeria for the convenience and enjoyment of guests.

What dining options are available at the Lake McDonald Lodge?

Lake McDonald Lodge has several dining options for those staying at the lodge. Inspired by the iconic Red Buses, Jammer Joe’s Grill & Pizzeria offers a diverse dining experience for all to savor. With lunch and buffet dinner menus featuring popular choices like an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, customizable pizzas, and an assortment of fresh soups, salads, and sandwiches, there is something to suit every taste. This is great for families and those who want a more laidback dining experience.

Lucke’s Lounge offers a taste of local Montana microbrews, a fine glass of wine, or a carefully crafted cocktail. As you unwind, take in a captivating lake view of the sparkling Lake McDonald from the dining room.

Russell’s Fireside Dining Room presents a distinctive dining experience reminiscent of its hunting lodge roots. For breakfast, choose from a hearty buffet or a lighter continental option. Lunch and dinner menus emphasize locally sourced dishes, providing an authentic taste of the region. If you plan on skipping the West Glacier restaurants but you want fine dining, Russell’s Fireside Dining Room is perfect.

Which types of rooms are available at Lake McDonald Lodge?

Lake McDonald Lodge features a variety of room types for guests. Some are definitely fancier than others, like the deluxe cabins, so you’ll want to keep this in mind when planning your Glacier National Park itinerary.

The Main Lodge rooms offer parking and queen beds in both the standard and deluxe rooms on the second floor with a private bathroom. Remember, amenities are somewhat limited, but you will have an ironing board, limited WiFi, and amenities in the park lodge. These rooms offer double occupancy and no air conditioning.

The Cobb House and Snyder Hall are located a short walking distance from the Main Lodge and offer additional types of stays. The Cobb House has three suites in these duplex style cabins. Each has 1 queen bed, sleeper sofa, and a private bathroom and sitting area.

Snyder Hall is a converted historic dormitory with eight hostel style rooms. These either include a double bed or twin beds, a sink, and access to the shared bathroom. Snyder rooms are very basic, but it can be fun to enjoy this rustic adventure.

All of these have access to the dining room, Jammer Joe’s Grill, Russell’s Fireside Dining, and other property amenities of the main building.

Keep in mind that there are no pets allowed other than service animals. This goes for all lodges inside the park.

What activities are near Lake McDonald Lodge?

One of the main benefits of staying on the shores of Lake McDonald is that it gives you access to some of the best things to do in Glacier National Park. Because it is located right on Going-to-the-Sun Road and the Glacier National Park shuttle stops right outside your door, you have an opportunity to see much of the park.

Boat tours: You have easy access to Glacier Park Boat Company‘s boat tours of Lake McDonald.
Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake Trail: This famous hike is located not far from the lodge and you’re much more likely to get a parking spot since you’re so close.
Red Bus Tours: These leave right from Lake McDonald Lodge and give you the perfect overview of Going-to-the-Sun Road up to Logan Pass.
Evening ranger programs: Glacier National Park rangers often lead talks in or near the lodge–it’s the perfect way to learn more about the park.
Horseback riding: Tours leave from the Lake McDonald Lodge.

How do I book reservations for Lake McDonald Lodge online?

You can book reservations for Lake McDonald Lodge on several different sites. I recommend booking on TripAdvisor since it gives you several different options of sites to book at the best prices.

Keep in mind that Glacier National Park lodges book out incredibly fast and usually at the beginning of the year. If it is really important for you to stay inside the park then you will need to make sure to get on it in January of the year you are visiting.

You’ll also need to be flexible if you want to stay inside the park. Use the date picker online to see if there are several different options before you book everything else including your flights to Glacier Park Intl, tours, car rental, and more.

How do I check in to the Lake McDonald Lodge?

There are some special check in instructions when it comes to staying at the lodge. When you reach the West Entrance of the park after West Glacier, you will need to show proof of your reservation. You will need to this to enter the park since Glacier National Park reservations are required for entry. Your lodge booking counts as your reservation ticket, but you will need to sho it at the gate.

Once you arrive at the lodge inside the park, enter in the main lodge and head to the reception where they greet guests. They should help you with your check in and let your know where your room is located.

Other options for accommodations inside the park

If it is completely necessary for you to stay inside the park, then you might need to look for other accommodations since places to stay near West Glacier tend to fill up fast. There are plenty of places to stay outside, but if you can’t help but stay inside the park, then you might want to check these lodges out:

Many Glacier Hotel: A beautiful lodge on Swiftcurrent Lake with easy access to boat cruises. You can also catch the Red Bus Tours from here.
Swiftcurrent Motor Inn: Located on the opposite side of West Glacier near East Glacier, this spot is ideal for those look for a stripped-back experience.
Granite Park Chalet: You’ll have to hike to this famous chalet with a rustic feel inside the park.
