Looking to visit Rainbow Falls on your trip to the Big Island of Hawaii?
Located in Wailuku River State Park, Rainbow Falls was one of my favorite things to do in Hilo and on the Big Island. Along with Akaka Falls, this beautiful waterfall is located not too far from downtown Hilo town and includes a short walk.
If you have some time in the area, you’re going to want to check out this stunning example of Big Island waterfalls–I’m glad I took the time to do it!

Where is Rainbow Falls?
Rainbow Falls is located a short distance from the town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hilo town is located on the southeast corner of the Big Island.
The falls flows from the Wailuku River, and is park of the Wailuku River State Park.
How do I get to Rainbow Falls?
From downtown Hilo, make your way onto Waianuenue Avenue. This street is a main artery through Hilo, so it should be relatively easy to find and an easy drive to Wailuku River State Park. Keep your eyes open for signs indicating Rainbow Falls, or “Waiānuenue” as it’s known in Hawaiian.
Once on Waianuenue Avenue, take a right turn onto Rainbow Drive. Proceed along this road until you reach the parking lot for Rainbow Falls. It’s well-marked and hard to miss. After parking, it’s only a short stroll to the falls viewing area.
Since parking is free, the parking lot fills up quickly during the afternoons and evenings, so keep this in mind when planning your Big Island itinerary and be prepared to wait during the time of day.

Why is the waterfall named Rainbow Falls?
Rainbow Falls derives its name from its equivalent in Hawaiian language: the waterfall is also known by its Hawaiian name “Waiānuenue.” “Wai” translates to “water,” and “ānuenue” means “rainbow,” reinforcing the connection between the falls and the colorful arcs they often produce.
When is the best time to visit Rainbow Falls?
The best time to visit Rainbow Falls depends on whether or not you want to avoid the rainy season and get soaked, or during dry spells when the waterfall tends to be much less impressive. I recommend that you choose the best time to visit Hawaii for your vacation during March to September, but you can still see the rainbow water any time of year!
Early mornings are also typically the best since you are more likely to see the rainbows in the water at the waterfall is famous for.
Is there an entry fee for Rainbow Falls?
There is no admission fee to visit Rainbow Falls.
Is Rainbow Falls open certain hours?
Rainbow Falls is open to the public from sunrise to sunset every day.
When is the best time to get pictures of Rainbow Falls?
For the quintessential rainbow shot at Rainbow Falls, aim to visit between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM when the sun’s alignment often creates a rainbow in the mist. The falls are also striking after rainfall, with a stronger, more voluminous flow. Early evening offers softer light and fewer crowds, ideal for long exposure photography. As the weather and water volume can vary, flexibility is key for capturing the perfect image.
The lighting is also wonderful when the sun rises, so if you are up for early, sunny mornings, this can be a great tim to get your photo. You’re also more likely to find space in the parking lot.
Can you go swimming in Rainbow Falls?
While the pools below the falls are not safe for swimming, the pools above are. Remember that this is at your own risk, and you should make sure that you do this when the Wailuku River is low and there hasn’t been much rainfall.
Also keep in mind that this location of legends sacred to the Hawaiians and that you should keep in mind if you do choose to swim on your visit.
How to hike to Rainbow Falls
From the parking lot, it’s just a quick, flat, and short hike to the Rainbow Falls viewing area in Wailuku River State Park. This makes it an easily accessible spot even for those with mobility issues or families with small children.
However, for those seeking a bit more adventure, you can find a stairway near the main lookout which leads you up through a lush rainforest to the top of the falls. Be cautious, as the trail and stairs can be slippery, especially after rainfall. At the top, you’ll find an impressive viewpoint overlooking Hilo and the pool of water below.

The trip to the top is a short walk, but the steps are quite steep, so ensure you’re wearing appropriate footwear and take your time to avoid any accidents. The top also features ancient banyan trees which are worth the trip itself. If you’re up for it, I highly recommend coming up here to see the mist thrown over the lava cave from a different angle and to enjoy the banyan grove.
From start to finish, your adventure at Rainbow Falls can be as quick as 15 minutes or as long as an hour or more, depending on how much time you spend admiring the views and exploring the surroundings.

Tips for visiting Rainbow FallsHere are some of my tips for visiting Rainbow Falls and how you can make the most of your time there.
- Pack the right gear: Although the short trail to the falls isn’t extremely strenuous, proper footwear is necessary because the trail can be slippery, especially after rains. Don’t forget your camera and consider bringing a waterproof cover or bag to protect your gear from the mist.
- Respect the land and local customs: Remember that the falls are a part of the sacred Hawaiian culture, associated with the goddess Hina and her mythological home. Please respect the area by staying on marked paths, not moving any rocks, and disposing of trash properly.
- Be prepared for changing weather: Hawaii’s weather can be quite unpredictable, so come prepared for sudden rain showers even on the sunniest of days. A lightweight rain jacket or poncho can be a lifesaver.
- Explore nearby attractions: After visiting Rainbow Falls, don’t miss out on the other nearby attractions. Places like the Boiling Pots area, Pe’epe’e Falls, and the rest of Wailuku River State Park are all nearby and well worth a visit.
