Want to go into your Glacier National Park rafting trip prepared?

Want to know something I had never done until recently even though I grew up right near Glacier National Park? I had never been Glacier National Park rafting! I can’t believe that I missed such a great opportunity to visit the park in a totally different way–and I would highly recommend that you do the same while you are there.

Even though I had been rafting several times before, the biggest concern I had was falling in and facing the freezing-cold temperatures that the Flathead River boasts. Luckily, we went with a wonderful company and I felt very secure in my raft!

In summary: This guide will go into what you should expect on a typical rafting trip in Glacier, as well as what you should bring, and some commonly-asked questions.

Quick tip: Consider following up your rafting trip with some huckleberry ice cream in West Glacier–it’s my favorite way to end an adventurous day on the way!

What to expect rafting on your Montana whitewater rafting trip

Whitewater rafting in Glacier National Park is a blast and for the most part, you shouldn’t have any worries when it comes to safety. Guiding companies have to have the highest standards, and you will need to sign a waiver before you are allowed to go on your trip.

After a quick talk, you’ll board a bus that will take you to the launch. The first third of the trip is pretty calm, and you’ll learn different paddling commands in order to navigate the whitewater in Montana. You’ll also learn what to do if you fall off the raft and how to float safely and get back on if you need to.

Along the way, your guide will share information about the park and its history and geology. You’ll hit some rapids, but don’t worry! I found it pretty difficult to fall out of the raft, and I felt prepared for if I did. Eventually, you’ll float in a calmer spot where you can go for a swim in the cold water (45 degrees Fahrenheit) if you would like.

What to bring for rafting in Glacier National Park

One of the things I loved best about Glacier Raft Company is that they pretty much supply you with everything you need in order to have an amazing experience. After rafting in several other areas around the world, that isn’t always the case!

You will need to wear clothes that you are okay with getting wet. While Glacier Raft Company provides splash suits if you would like, it’s often just easier to put on a swimsuit and tee that you feel comfortable getting a bit soaked.

You will also need to bring shoes that have straps–no flip flops! I’ve taken my Chacos with me on several rafting trips and I love them. They’re also super inexpensive and you know that they won’t slip off in case you fall in.

Your rafting company will provide you with a life jacket and helmet. Glacier Raft Company also has some waterproof jackets for cooler days if you don’t want to get too wet!

Glacier Raft Company recommends keeping your valuables in the car, and they will hold your keys for you so that you don’t have to worry about them falling overboard! This includes your cell phone, wallet, jewelry, and more.

Glacier National Park rafting FAQs

Here are some questions I frequently get from visitors looking to add rafting in Glacier National Park to their Glacier itinerary!

I’ve rafted a lot, and I honestly found that my time rafting in Glacier was one of the safest experiences I had. I would not say that it was dangerous by any means.

That being said, you have several different rafting trips available. You can always start with a scenic float and see how you feel before trying some more advanced rapids.

You do not need entry passes or a timed entry reservation to raft in Glacier. Since most tours depart from West Glacier, you can enjoy the tour without passes.

However, if you are doing a full-day raft, you might start from a different area. You can always ask your guide beforehand so you know whether or not you will need it on your person.

Quick tip: Consider rafting in the morning and then visiting the park in the afternoon to avoid the reservation system!

I would say rafting in Glacier is safe for most kids 12 and up. Not every kid will love the experience, but if you have an adventurous preteen or teen, then go for it!

You always have the option to take on a scenic float trip if you have younger kids.

Most visitors choose to raft during the summer months when it’s the best time to visit Glacier National Park. June through September is typically the ideal time once things have warmed up.

A scenic float is ideal for those who have never rafted before or who are looking for a more relaxed experience. Many companies have this as an option so you shouldn’t have a problem booking it.

I do not recommend bringing your camera or phone with you while rafting. Most rafting companies also suggest that you leave your valuables behind.

I highly recommend Glacier Raft Company, though all guiding companies in the area are excellent. Glacier Raft Company has been around for decades and they have it down pat–I can’t imagine not having a good time with them!

Conclusion

If you’re wondering the best things to do in Glacier, then rafting should definitely be on your list. Not only is it a great way to see the park from an entirely new angle, but it also gives you a break from hiking.

I’ve tried to include what information you need so you can pack appropriately, get an idea of what the experience would be like, and decide which type of raft is right for you!
