20 Fantastic Things to Do in Seward, Alaska You Can’t Miss

When Daniel and I went to the Last Frontier, we had a blast in the town of Seward. The number of things to do in Seward, Alaska was incredible, and I almost wish we had had more time to explore there. Most of the activities you will find here will be either sea or air-based. After walking around Seward, and trying some of the best Seward restaurants, it’s time to get ready to jump on a boat or in a helicopter in order to really get a sense of how amazing the nature is here!

Things to do in Seward, Alaska that are perfect for your trip

Here are the things to do in Seward, Alaska you’re not going to want to miss on your Alaska road trip!

Kenai Fjords National Park

Vibrant ecosystems and unparalleled scenery await in Kenai Fjords National Park, one of the top things to do in Seward, Alaska, and one of the best Alaska national parks. Covering about 700,000 acres on the Kenai Peninsula in south-central Alaska, this area is home to tidewater glaciers, impressive fjords, and a massive icefield. 

While you’re here, spend a day hiking the Harding Icefield Trail, a strenuous 8.2-mile hike, which begins at the bottom of the valley, winding uphill through lush forests and passing through meadows. When you reach the top of the trail, the long journey will have been well worth it; you will be rewarded with stunning views of the icefield.

The best way to see the park is with a boat cruise. You can even find ones that stop at Fox Island, where you can have a lovely dinner and get views of the park from a new angle!

Exit Glacier

Located in Kenai Fjords National Park, the Exit Glacier is the only section of the park accessible via the road. You can marvel at this active glacier, take a hike, or go on a ranger-led walk. Descending 3,000 feet, the glacier displays magnificent blue ice and a natural ramp for mountaineers exploring the icefield. You can book this trip yourself!

A network of well-maintained trails begins from the visitor center and leads all the way to the toe of the glacier. Start at the one-mile Glacier View Loop, leading to a scenic view overlooking the glacier’s descent. Hike

If you’re wondering what to do in Seward, Alaska, hiking is a must. Boasting gorgeous glaciers, sparkling lakes, and dense forests, Seward is home to some of Alaska’s most beautiful hiking areas. Here, you can find beautiful hikes for all skill levels. For an easy hiking option, check out the Seaward waterfront. This leisurely stroll features ocean views and plenty of seashells. 

Caines Head Trail, a moderate trail, is a four-mile path that offers both forest and beachside scenery. If you are up for a challenge, try the Resurrection River Trail.

This hike starts in a lush forest along a wild river bottom, then eventually leads to creek views, camping, and mountain scenery. With a total of 16 miles, you will experience every kind of beauty that Alaska has to offer. With so many trails, hiking is one of the best things to do in Seward, AK.

Alaska SeaLife Center

Located on the shores of Resurrection Bay, the Alaska SeaLife Center is the only permanent marine life rehabilitation facility in Alaska, and is one of the top Seward attractions. Your ticket will include close encounters with harbor seals, octopuses, sea lions, and puffins while learning about scientists’ research and the ecosystem these animals inhabit. 

There are plenty of hands-on exhibits, so the kids are sure to love this attraction. An ideal destination for animal lovers, the Alaska SeaLife Center is an excellent spot to spend an entire afternoon.

Holgate Glacier

Holgate Glacier, located within Kenai Fjords National Park, is a tidewater and mountain glacier situated in Aialik Bay. Even though this is a smaller glacier than some of the others within the area, it is popular among tourists and one of the most beautiful in the region. 

As the ice falls into the sea, you will see breathtaking blues and magnificent crashes in the water. This area is also an excellent spot for adventuring on the water. Many animals call this area home, and you might even see a humpback whale, sea otter, black bear, eagle, or sea lion.

Bear Glacier

Bear Glacier is one of the best Seward things to do. Situated 12 miles from Seward, Bear Glacier Lagoon is a paradise for kayakers, paddleboarders, and campers. As a lake that forms between a glacier and its moraine, Bear Glacier Lagoon is a proglacial lagoon. 

While exploring this spectacular area, take in the sight of giant icebergs formed from a larger glacier in the park. Consider going on a guided tour of this lake, as this lake is not beginner-friendly. Unique hazards around this area can require someone with expertise and local knowledge.

Fishing

Known as one of the top sport-fishing destinations in the state, fishing is one of the most popular things to do in Seward, Alaska. The waters surrounding Seward are filled with several different fish species, including halibut, lingcod, rockfish, and all five kinds of Pacific salmon. Late June through early September is a popular time for saltwater combo fishing trips. 

The area offers guided charter fishing trips, but opportunities for shore fishing also abound. There are several places for shoreline and surf-casting access, with several of these spots located just a few minutes from downtown. Several kinds of fish can be targeted from the shore in Resurrection Bay in the summer, but guided fishing trips are recommended for beginners.

Kayaking in Resurrection Bay

Resurrection Bay is home to calm and easy waters, perfect for beginner kayakers. Guided kayaking tours of the bay are a great way to experience these waters up-close. While kayaking this area, it’s not uncommon to see abundant marine life, like sea otters, seals, and bald eagles. 

While kayaking in the bay, you will likely get to explore wilderness areas that are only accessible via boat. Expect to see dramatic coastlines, rocky beaches, and an abundance of wild salmon.

Fox Island

Also known as Renard Island, Fox Island is located in Resurrection Bay. This island boasts a rich history and an abundance of wilderness areas, making this one of the most beautiful things to do in Seward, Alaska. At 3.4 miles long and two miles wide, there are plenty of opportunities for exploration on this mountainous island. 

Pebble beaches, misty waters, and quiet lagoons are just a few of the stunning sights on the island. While at Fox Island, check out the Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge, where you can have a delicious meal of fresh seafood, and even stay the night.

Dog sledding

What better way to experience Alaska than to experience a dog sledding ride? You can experience the picturesque snowy terrain while enjoying a two-mile guided dog sledding tour with Seward Helicopter Tours. 

Along the way, listen to the dog musher tell stories about their time with the dogs on the Alaskan terrain. For the cherry on top, you can snuggle with adorable husky puppies afterward, and don’t forget to take lots of pictures!

Salmon spotting

From late July to early October, you can view plenty of salmon at Ptarmigan Creek, which includes a viewing platform over the creek and a trail with plenty of other viewing opportunities. 

Trail Lakes Fish Hatchery is another spot with lots of salmon, depending on the time of year. While you’re here, you can learn how the fish are raised before they are released into the surrounding lakes and bays. With an abundance of these fish, salmon spotting is one of the top things to do in Seward.

Mt. Marathon

Made famous by an annual running race that began in 1915, Mt. Marathon attracts runners from all over the world. Visitors race up and down the mountain, running over 3,000 feet in less than three miles. For those who choose to hike instead of run, plan for this to be an all-day excursion. 

This mountain has two trail options: the Jeep Trail and the Runner’s Trail. The Runner’s Trail is extremely difficult, while the Jeep Trail is a 4.1-mile loop that includes various incline levels, making this the more manageable option.

Take a water taxi

For an efficient way to get around Seward while also seeing the beautiful scenery and wildlife, you won’t regret taking a water taxi. You will be able to access areas only reachable by boat, enjoy nature along the way, and spot plenty of incredible photo opportunities.

Visit the waterfront and downtown

The charming and quirky downtown area is one of the best things to do in Seward, Alaska. From local boutiques to amazing restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do in this neighborhood. While strolling downtown, you will find several amazing eateries and breweries. Seward Brewing Company, on 4th Avenue, is an excellent place to sample locally brewed craft beers–it’s by far one of the best breweries in Alaska!

Resurrect Art Coffeehouse is another unique spot. Nestled in an old church, this business displays local art and sells fresh pastries. Seward Waterfront Park, situated downtown, is a must-see; spanning over five miles, you can see several landmarks and monuments.

Spot the murals

Although the word “art” may not be the first thing you think of when someone mentions Seward, this town truly has a love of public artwork. As you stroll through the quaint streets of downtown, look for 12 giant murals, all of which were painted by local artists. 

There are 30 murals total throughout the town of Seward, which depict the colorful history and local sights of the city, including Mt. Marathon and Exit Glacier. Whales swimming downtown and puffins in the harbor are depicted in a few other vibrant scenes.

Iditarod Trail and Monument

Before the Iditarod Trail was a dogsled race, it was a long system of trails that began in Seward and led from the Kenai Peninsula Corridor to the Iditarod Mining District, and finally, to Nome. 

This iconic trail system is commemorated today by the Iditarod Dogsled Race that goes from Anchorage to Nome. Near Seward, you can hike portions of this trail during the summer on Nash Road. At the beginning of the trail, in Seward, you can see the statue of a 1900s gold prospector and his pack dog.

Check out the tide pools

Exploring Alaska’s tide pools can be one of the most fascinating things to do in Seward, Alaska. There is an abundance of unique invertebrates that make their homes between high and low tide. While visiting the tide pools, you can see critters like sea cucumbers, sponges, sea stars, hermit crabs, and barnacles. 

However, be sure to exercise caution while exploring tide pools. Be aware that the brown and green algae are extremely slippery, and a pair of boots with good traction can keep you from falling. It is also important to explore tide pools from the edges. This way, the tide pool ecosystem remains undisturbed while you will also have better viewing conditions.

Take a helicopter ride

Taking a helicopter ride can be one of the most exhilarating Seward activities. If you book a tour with Seward Helicopter Tours, you can see the most beautiful attractions in the area from the sky. Helicopter tours seat three people and range from 15-60 minutes.

Ride the Alaska Railroad

The Alaska Railroad runs from Anchorage to Seward and is likely one of the most scenic train routes in the world. From Seward, you can ride to Girdwood, Alaska, and then onto Anchorage. This is an excellent way to experience more of Alaska outside of Seward. 

As a tiny mountain town, Girdwood is one of the most beautiful areas in Alaska. Continue onto Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, for more of an urban flavor. The Alaska Railroad is guaranteed to provide stunning coastal views, lush forests, and incredible mountain scenery.

Seward Community Library and Museum

The Seward Community Library and Museum’s exterior is just as impressive as its interior. Upon arrival, it’s impossible to miss the vibrant multi-hued stainless steel tiles that make this building shine with color. On the side of the building, you’ll find a lovely outdoor garden and sitting area which faces a colorful mural. 

Inside, the library features a beautiful view of Resurrection Bay, along with plenty of books to browse. The museum, open Friday and Saturday, has exhibits on display that detail the history of Seward, Alaska.
